Tea was first trialled in Africa around the beginning of the C20th and both production and popularity has increased year on year ever since. The machinery used to manufacture tea in Africa tends to be the newer style of CTC (Cut Tear Curl) as opposed to the traditional Orthodox manufacture. CTC machines were designed to produce a small leaf that would infuse quickly and deliver a strong liquor - perfect for teabags and for taking milk. As a result, there is very little Orthodox manufacture carried out in Africa, although there is also a strong herbal trade, especially in Rooibos (a grass native to South Africa drunk as a herbal tea). The main tea producing countries of Africa are: Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, Burundi, Ethiopia, Tanzania, South Africa and Zimbabwe.
